Misconceptions of Hypnosis

Well, it is 3 days until the smoking ban stats here in the UK on July 1st. And, the interesting thing is that studies now suggest that hypnosis and hypnotherapy is one of the most effective ways to help you stop smoking. Hypnotherapy has been round for 100’s of years and has been used by mainstream medical practitioners since the 60’s and 70’s. However some people still think it is mind control voodoo or something!! I have recently been turned down by ITV to do a piece on Hypnosis and how it can help you stop smoking because they don’t like the idea of it, they think it is “BAD” and “DANGEROUS” and “DOESN’T WORK anyway….”

Hmmmm, I wasn’t aware that we were still living in the middle ages! I felt like a Witch put out on Trial (reminds of when Richard Bandler said to me that he though Paul McKenna was the last Witch tried in Britain – look up the story!). I can’t believe that such a large and forwarding-thinking organisation as ITV can have such outdated, uninformed and narrow minded opinions! So, to set anyone’s minds at rest about hypnosis allow me to clear up some of the misconceptions…

IT DOESN’T EXIST.
You are technically right. It doesn’t actually exist, hypnosis is not a thing, it is a methodology that allows us to utilise our natural tendency to alter our states.

Every been so engrossed in something that you have missed what is going on around you and maybe even lost track of time? You have been in an altered state.

Every driven somewhere and not remember the journey? Then you have been in a hypnotic trance.

Hypnosis is just the process of controlling these altered states to help you change behaviours, thought processes, learn quicker and more effectively, focus and concentrate more, remove fears and phobias etc.

YOU WILL BE UNCONSCIOUS
Nope. This is not general anaesthetic! You are perfectly aware of what is going on and can open your eyes at any time you want.

THE HYPNOTIST HAS TOTAL CONTROL AND MAKE YOU DO WHAT HE WANTS
A common misconception, often from watching stage hypnotists that give that impression (stage hypnosis should never be confused with clinic hypnosis, they are both very, very different things). When you are in a hypnotic trance, you are perfectly aware of what is going on around you, you are perfectly in control and you can open your eyes at any time. You cannot be made to do anything you don’t want to do. You are merely in a deeply relaxed and comfortable state, you may not remember everything that was said and you may lose track of time, but that is about it…

IT IS BAD/EVIL/ETC
What?! What a load of rubbish. It is an application, as skill, a technique to help you change your behaviour and thought processes. It is neither GOOD nor BAD, it is just hypnosis. It is a bit like saying a hammer is bad because you can use it to hurt people… It is the APPLICATION that is good ir bad and I am not saying there are not some evil people out there that have misused it. There are. But that is about finding the right therapist.

I hope that clears that up!
